People living in poverty have been having a difficult time getting access to food and water due to COVID-19 causing government shutdowns, forcing them to stay at home and not be able to go out and work. Many people living in these communities rely on informal work such as being a taxi driver, housekeeper, or street food vendor, but these shutdowns have stopped their income.
Many of those living in these areas of poverty are not able to travel to places to get access to healthcare. If these individuals do contract COVID-19, the only resource they would have is a public hospital, which is generally under-resourced in these areas.
Many people in these communities are also lacking the water needed to meet basic needs. Water is needed for basic survival, but in times like these, water is a critical resource since it is used for sanitation purposes to prevent the spread of the virus.
COVID-19 numbers continue to escalate, as the world rate is already past 17 million. Measures have been taken by countries around the world to stop the spread of this virus, but these measures have presented numerous challenges to families living in low-income communities.
